Outside the Frame: Focus on Contemporary Croatian Cinema in Brussels

The programme ‘Outside the Frame: Focus on Contemporary Croatian Film’, screening as part of this year’s edition of Brussels International Film Festival, held 3rd – 13th September 2020, consists of four Mediterranean stories seen through the lens of young authors.

‘Outside the Frame: Focus on Contemporary Croatian Film’ is a diverse programme in terms of both style and genre, consisting of works created by a generation of female and male authors born during the 1980s. These young authors offer fresh, contemporary perspectives, engaging with local film genres (Mediterranean comedy, coming-of-age stories) and social issues (gender expectations, nuclear family transformations, relationship between tradition and contemporaneity, generational portraits). What binds them together is their locale, since all the selected films take place in a Mediterranean setting, whereby the landscapes, tradition and history shape the atmosphere, characters and story in different ways.

The films screening in the programme are Comic Sans by Nevio Marasović, Igor Bezinović’s A Brief Excursion and Hana Jušić’s Quit Staring at My Plate, as well as Barbara Vekarić’s Aleksi, which was available for streaming at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts website earlier this summer (25th – 28th June).

The programme ‘Outside the Frame’ is part of a series of cultural events held on the occasion of Croatia’s presidency of the Council of the EU, created in collaboration with the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels.

The Brussels International Film Festival is held 3rd – 13th Sept, 2020, while more information about the Focus on Contemporary Croatian Film and the festival is available at Brussels IFF’s official website.
