Croatian films at Ottawa International Animation Festival

Three Croatian animated shorts to screen in competition programmes at the 43rd Ottawa International Animation Festival, taking place entirely online, 22nd September – 3rd October. In addition, Animafest Zagreb 2020 Festival Trailer to appear in a separate official selection, while one Croatian title finds itself in the programme devoted to the best of last year’s Ottawa IAF.

Marko Dješka’s All Those Sensations in My Belly is competing in the Narrative Short Animation category, while the film recently screened in competition programmes at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and ShortFest in Palm Springs, California.

It had its world premiere last year at the Anibar International Animation Festival, where it scooped up the award for best regional film in the Balkan competition, also receiving a Special Mention in the Croatian competition at this year’s Animafest Zagreb.

All Those Sensations in My Belly is an Adriatic Animation production (with Draško Ivezić as producer), created in co-production with Portuguese animation studio BAP, and the support of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and Portuguese Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA).

The Ottawa Non-narrative Short Animation competition will feature Marko Tadić’s experimental short Events Meant to Be Forgotten. Last year the film won a Special Mention at Animateka International Animated Film Festival in Slovenia, while its premiere screening came at the 25 FPS in Zagreb. The film is a Creative Syndicate production, co-produced by Zagreb Film, with producer Igor Grubić and co-producer Vinko Brešan. Events Meant to Be Forgotten also receive the support from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

Sunčana Brkulj’s The Tower finds itself in the Student Animation competition at Ottawa. The same as Dješka’s Sensations, The Tower also appeared at this year’s Annecy, which makes it Sunčana Brkulj’s second film in a row to be featured at the prestigious French festival. Brkulj created The Tower with the help of mentor Daniel Šuljić

Meanwhile, the Commissioned Animation selection will include the Festival Trailer for the 30th edition of the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb, created by Japanese artist Yoriko Mizushiri, which likewise screened at Annecy in June of this year.

In addition, Kata Gugić’s Cockpera has been selected to appear in a special programme called Best of Ottawa 2020, showcasing audience favourites and award winners from last year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival competition, which was also held online.

The Ottawa International Animation Festival is one of the most important world animation festivals, dedicated to “the most quirky, provocative and inspiring animation” from across the globe. The 43rd edition this year received 2528 entries from 104 countries, while 107 have been selected for screening in official competitions.
