Koko and the Ghosts tops domestic box office

The feature live-action film Koko and the Ghosts hit the record last weekend and is currently the number one box office entry in Croatia. This way it became the first Croatian film after several years to achieve such success – during the opening weekend it was seen by 6,884 people, which overcame the box office score of any domestic film in the last five years.

The screening of Koko and the Ghosts opened simultaneously in all major Croatian cities (Zagreb, Osijek, Split, Rijeka, Šibenik, Pula, Dubrovnik...) and will soon be available in movie theatres across Croatia. A special interest is expressed by elementary schools, in the form of organised school visits to the theatres, which represents special support in the box office sense.

The film was based on the eponymous literary classic, kids detective fiction by Ivan Kušan, written fifty years ago and still a mandatory reading list item in Croatian elementary schools. It was directed by Daniel Kušan, and it stars Antonio Parač, Nina Mileta, Kristian Bonačić, Filip Mayer, Ivan Maltarić, Ozren Grabarić, Dijana Vidušin and many others. It premiered at this year’s Pula Film Festival, where it also won the audience award.

Koko and the Ghosts is a story about a boy named Koko, who moves to the city from the countryside and finds new friends, but when he gets into trouble he will need the help from the ‘old’ ones as well. The flat he moves in used to belong to Vincek, an old scrooge whose death is veiled by mystery...

The film was produced by the Zagreb company Kinorama and co-produced by Croatian Radio and Television (HRT).
