Best short animated film at 69th BAFTAs edited by Zagreb’s Nina Rac

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts held their awards ceremony last weekend in London, and the winner of Best Short Animation was Edmond, the crew of which included Zagreb’s own Nina Rac. The film was written, directed and animated in classic 2D by Holland’s Nina Gantz, while Nina Rac was the editor.

The film was a final project for the NFTS (National Film and Television School.) Nina Gantz started with the idea to make a film about, as she says “that feeling you have when you love someone so much you just want to bite them.” We weren’t expecting to win because we were nominated alongside Richard Williams who is a master of animation and who’s film ‘Prologue’ was nominated for an Oscar this year. Of course, it’s great, it is very motivating when a film you worked on has been recognized and you know it will be watched,’ says Nina Rac.

Along with Nina Gantz and Nina Rac, collaborators on the film also included producer Emilie Jouffroy, cinematographer Ian Forbes, production designer Laura Mickiewicz, lead 3D stop motion animator Adam M. Watts, as well as head 2D classic animators Nina Gantz and Terri Matthews. The sound designer is Rob Turner, the composer is Terence Dunn, and the visual effects supervisor is Felipe Olid Guerrero.

Edmond is a love story aimed at examining one’s own desires, and it recently won the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for Best Animated Film.

Nina Rac was born in Zagreb where she graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, followed by editing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. She lives, works and continues to educate herself in London. She has worked on a dozen films including editing the film I Hate You by Lana Kosovac.
